(Well, to begin with, Sea Bear was born in Venezuela, so Spanish is their first language.
They got to Canada when they were four, and the only English they knew was the English they had learned from television and their parents (Sea Bear doesn’t quite remember if their school taught them anything). Since they moved, they’ve become pretty well acquainted with the language (they still have a lot of brain farts where they can’t remember a word or two).
And this being Canada, French is taught in schools, though it becomes an option after ninth grade. Sea Bear plans on continuing to take French, since it is useful to speak different languages.
Nowadays, there are programs to help you learn better. It definitely helps a lot more if you immerse yourself in the music, and movies (books are Very Hard, even when starting with smaller abridged versions- but you learn nuances and turns of phrase!). Hearing the words spoken, or seeing the way the mouth forms them, helps a lot when it comes to speaking.)
